Crew of the SS Valiant.

Unnamed[]

Captain []

After the Valiant made contact with the galactic barrier circa 2065, its captain repeatedly requested that the ship's computer provide any and all information on ESP in Human beings. His requests became more frantic until eventually he gave the order to self-destruct. This information was recorded on the Valiant's disaster recorder, recovered by the USS Enterprise two hundred years later.

When James T. Kirk and Spock were later discussing what to do about Gary Mitchell, Kirk criticized Spock's suggestion that they kill Mitchell while they were still able to as being callous and unfeeling. Spock then reminded Kirk that the Valiant's captain likely struggled with the same dilemma, ultimately causing him to wait too long in a vain attempt to preserve the lives of his crew; something the Vulcan felt Kirk was already aware of, but didn't want to admit. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before")

This character was only mentioned in dialogue.
The TNG novel The Valiant gives his name as Carlos Tarasco (β).

Crew casualties []

These six crewmen died after the Valiant made contact with the galactic barrier. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before")

These crewmen were only mentioned in dialogue.
According to The Valiant, the six dead included Amir Rashad (β) (first officer), Kolodny (β), Davidoff (β) (an engineer), Rivers (β), Yoshii (β), and Zoskii (β).

Recovered crewman []

This crewman was injured by the damage the galactic barrier wreaked on the Valiant, only to recover. It was shortly afterwards that the captain began to search for ESP information on the crew. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before")

This character was only mentioned in dialogue.
Though not expressly stated, it is suggested that this crewman is the one who necessitated the self-destruct, as Mitchell similarly appeared to have recovered from his injuries.
The Valiant gives his name as Geirrod Agnarsson (β). In the novel, other crewmen are also killed when Agnarsson escapes from his confinement aboard the ship. Further crewmembers survive the self-destruct and eventually colonize a planet, changing into more fully developed Humans.
