The Sagan class was a type of Federation starship used by Starfleet in the early 25th century.

History[]

The Sagan-class ship was designed and built by Starfleet in the later years of the 24th century. By 2401, the first ship in the class, the USS Stargazer, had already received an NCC commission, and was the first of a new class of ship to utilize components derived from research on the Borg cube Artifact that was found in the Beta Quadrant. Later that same year, fourteen ships of this class were involved in fleet maneuvers to celebrate 250 years since Enterprise NX-01 took her first voyage. They were commandeered after officers under the age of 25 were placed under the influence of the Borg with the help of Jack Crusher. (PIC: "Võx", "The Last Generation")

Technical data[]

Physical arrangement[]

USS Ashland

Dorsal view

The Sagan-class features a unique physical configuration atypical of most Starfleet ships. The primary hull and secondary hull are streamlined together without the need of a connecting neck. This class of ship also features a four nacelle layout. (PIC: "The Star Gazer")

Tactical systems[]

As was common during this time period, Sagan-class ships featured phaser arrays placed along the hull to cover a full 360 degree firing arc.

At least one ship of this class, the USS Stargazer, was deployed with both deflector shields, and multiphasic shielding as they were tasked by Starfleet to investigate an unknown anomaly in 2401.

Armory[]

A Sagan-class armory

There was at least one armory located on board the Sagan-class, accessible from a standard corridor. This area provided access to numerous phasers and phaser rifles attached to the bulkhead for access by security personnel. (PIC: "The Star Gazer")

Propulsion systems[]

The Sagan-class features propulsion systems common for the period, including warp drive, and two impulse engines on the rear of the ship.

Interior design[]

See Sagan-class decks.

Overall, the interior of the ship was dark, and primarily furnished with reflective flooring and walls, doing away with the brighter and warmer carpeted interiors common with earlier starships.

Main bridge[]

The main bridge was located on Deck 1, and maintained a traditional layout, with the helm and operations stations at the front of the ship, and the captain's chair in the middle. Various stations were placed on the perimeter of the bridge, including tactical, engineering, and communications.

Observation lounge[]

Behind the bridge was the ship's observation lounge. The lounge featured several large windows facing the rear of the ship. The ship's top two nacelles could easily be seen through the windows to the occupants in the room. Along the entrance were display cases, with featured memorabilia and artifacts custom to the captain or to the ship's lineage. A large display monitor was placed along the side wall, which enabled staff to quickly get updates on a situation or communicate with other ships nearby.

Hangar bay[]

The hangar bay was located on Deck 7.

Corridors[]

Corridors on the Sagan-class were wider than previous generations, and easily enabled the ship's crew to get where they were going without feeling crowded or bumping into each other. These were also lined with darker paneling similar to the main bridge. (PIC: "The Star Gazer")

Command and control systems[]

By 2401, the computer systems on board the class had been built to include the Fleet formation mode, also known as Starfleet emergency protocol NX12.11, designed to place all Federation starships within a fleet under the automated control of the Starfleet mainframe. (PIC: "Võx")

Background information[]

This class was designed by Production Designer Dave Blass, and Production Illustrators Doug Drexler and John Eaves, [1] [2] with major input from Cryptic Studios' Thomas Marrone. (PIC Season 2 Blu-ray-special feature: "The USS Stargazer") Blass also was responsible for the class' interior design, together with Designer Igor Knezevic among others. [3]

Though not used in dialogue, this class was named on the Stargazer's dedication plaque and shared by Radiant-class designer Bill Krause, seen as a physical display model in the "The Star Gazer" episode. [4] [5] It was presumably named for astronomer Carl Sagan.

Turbolift graphics of the Stargazer created by Geoffrey Mandel depict the class as 16 decks tall. [6] Further production material suggests that this ship class is 1774 feet (540.7 meters) in length.
