The sail was a rigid cloth structure designed to catch the wind in order for a sailing vessel to be propelled through the water. (ENT: "Civilization"; Star Trek Generations)
When the USS Enterprise first encountered Pollux IV in 2267, the ship was captured in the grips of Apollo's green hand. After Apollo made verbal contact with the Enterprise, Captain James T. Kirk asked if he was responsible for stopping the ship. Apollo acknowledged that he "caused the wind to withdraw from your sails," prompting Kirk to demand he "give it back" before they would talk. (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?")
In an alternate timeline, Commander Chakotay recalled the story of a 19th century sailor named Captain Cray, whose ship was hit by a typhoon in the Pacific Ocean, and everyone back in England thought the ship would never return. Eight months later, Cray and his crew sailed into London harbor, with the remains of his tattered ship, consisting of only a few planks and half a sail, according to some accounts. (VOY: "Year of Hell")
