Wedding ceremonies held by both Captain James T. Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard, spoke of similar events and the "happy privilege" of shipmasters dating back to the times of the "first wooden sailing ships" of "uniting two people in the bonds of matrimony." (TOS: "Balance of Terror"; TNG: "Data's Day")

Benjamin Sisko noted how being aboard an ancient Bajoran lightships, which operated with the notably absent hum of an engine, was "almost like being on the deck of an old sailing ship, except the stars are not just up in the sky, they're all around us." (DS9: "Explorers")
