In nautical terms, a sailing ship or tall ship was to any ocean-going vessel that was propelled by wind-powered sails. In naval tradition, ship's were generally defined as being much larger than boats.
These vessels were the primary tools of the United State, British, and Japanese Navies, spanning several centuries.
Wedding ceremonies held by both Captain James T. Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard, spoke of similar events and the "happy privilege" of shipmasters dating back to the times of the "first wooden sailing ships" of "uniting two people in the bonds of matrimony." (TOS: "Balance of Terror"; TNG: "Data's Day")
During the 18th and 19th centuries, ocean-going Yankee traders from America sailed in oceans in search of mercantile and territorial opportunity. By the 24th century, "modern" scholars likened the Ferengi to these Yankee traders, who instead sail the galaxy for similar opportunities. (TNG: "The Last Outpost")
