A sampler was an example of one's proficiency at needlework.

In 2371, during Kathryn Janeway's participation in holoprogram Janeway Lambda one, Beatrice Burleigh mentioned having just completed her first sampler. When "Lucille Davenport" expressed her interest in seeing it, she claimed to have given it to her mother. When Beatrice's brother Henry Burleigh tried to explain that she had given it to her before the woman died, the girl refuted that, saying she'd given it to her last night, having seen her then.
