The San Francisco Herald was one of several periodical newspapers established during the mid-19th century in San Francisco, California.

Jean-Luc Picard, as Dixon Hill, bought a copy of a 1941 edition of the Herald from a newsstand, where he read about such period individuals as Adolf Hitler, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Joe DiMaggio, as well as the death of a holo-character, Jessica Bradley. (TNG: "The Big Goodbye")

The San Francisco Herald was a fictional newspaper. In 1998, eleven years after the episode was filmed, a real newspaper was founded under the same name which circulated until 2008.
