The Science Fiction Book Club is a subscription-based book club. First established in 1953, the SFBC originally offered one title per month, which members received and could return if not wanted. Over time, the number of titles offered and the number that could be purchased per month increased – by the 1980s, five or six titles were available per month. Titles were often offered at a discount.
As part of their offering, the SFBC commissioned exclusive editions of novels, including hardback editions of paperback releases and omnibus collection of series that were otherwise not produced. These releases included a number of Star Trek novels and reference works originally published by Bantam Books, E.P. Dutton, and Pocket Books; the first such release was an edition of the Star Fleet Technical Manual in July 1976.
