"We're not talking about conjecture, we're talking about science."
"Science is the answer here. Every puzzle has a solution, every disease a cure. It's just a matter of finding it."
""Microbiology, xenobiology, astrobiology..."
"There really are a lot of sciences, aren't there? Too many if you ask me."
"Ah, it seems like proper amount..."

Science is a system for the acquisition and organization of empirical and theoretical knowledge. The formal sciences, the natural sciences, and the social sciences are the three primary fields of science. All three divisions had both theoretical and applied components and practitioners. Scientists specifically engage in research using the scientific method to expand the overall body of scientific knowledge, to form hypotheses, and to establish theories.

As of 2384, the Federation recognized 196 distinct scientific disciplines. (PRO: "Asylum")

As Commander Michael Burnham learned from President T'Rina in 3189, science could not be separated from cultural and political contexts. The Federation had requested the data related to experimental program SB-19 from the planet Ni'Var. SB-19 was the planet's contribution to the Federation for solving the dilithium crisis of the 31st century. In the aftermath of the catastrophic event known as the "The Burn", it had come to be believed on Ni'Var that the Federation had forced them into continuing SB-19 over the objections of scientists, who feared the technology was dangerous, and that SB-19 was the cause for the Burn. Within a generation, Ni'Var had declared its independence from the Federation, with the minority Romulans opposed to the secession. By the late 32nd century, SB-19 had become, in the words of T'Rina, an "issue of great cultural and political sensitivity". She was concerned about the implications associated with SB-19 and about old wounds being reopened, which might have a negative effect on the reunification of Vulcans and Romulans on Ni'Var. Science was among the school subjects Keiko O'Brien taught in her classroom aboard Deep Space 9. (DS9: "In the Hands of the Prophets")

One of the many starship classes employed by Starfleet was science vessels, the primary mission of which was scientific research. (DIS: "The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry")
