For the Section: 31 novel, please see Shadow (novel).

A shadow was the effect caused by an object or individual blocking out a light source.

In 2267, the flying parasites found on Deneva mainly stayed in the shadows. James T. Kirk recalled this, coming to the conclusion that they were light-sensitive. (TOS: "Operation -- Annihilate!")

In 2268, while mind melding, Spock repeatedly stated that the bullets that the landing party on Melkot were about to be shot with were only shadows (i.e. not real) This was to make them immune to the projectiles' effects. (TOS: "Spectre of the Gun")
