A social gathering, social occasion, or social function was an event that was held to foster social interaction in a group setting, often involving food and entertainment.

in 2267, following the revival of the 20th century augment, Khan Noonien Singh, USS Enterprise historian, Lieutenant Marla McGivers, suggested that the ship's crew prepare a dinner engagement to welcome him to the 23rd century. Upon viewing the spread, Doctor Leonard McCoy compared the spread to one where one might be expecting a fleet admiral.

During the actual socialization portion of the occasion, Captain James T. Kirk took note of Khan's "tendency to express ideas in military terms," before reminding him that "this is a social occasion." Khan replied, "it has been said that social occasions are only warfare concealed. Many prefer it more honest, more open." (TOS: "Space Seed")

In 2364, during a (particularly abrasive) social occasion to celebrate the upcoming marriage of Wyatt Miller and Deanna Troi, hosted aboard the USS Enterprise, Captain Jean-Luc Picard offered a toast, declaring that "it is a Starfleet tradition that at social gatherings, disputes are not permitted. I hereby declare therefore all disagreements resolved." (TNG: "Haven")
