A "space race" was a term used to describe an informal competition to be the first in a specific space-based advancement. The term could also be used to describe literal races in space. These were competitive sports involving racing ships.

During the 24th century, the Devron 500 was a space race in which racers crossed into the Romulan Neutral Zone; thus it was illegal. When Sam Rutherford was a first year cadet, he built racing ships for the Devron 500 in his garage. (LD: "Reflections")

In 2375, Captain Kathryn Janeway claimed the crew of the USS Voyager, who was in the midst of building the Delta Flyer, had an "old fashioned space race" on their hands when they discovered the Malon were also building a spacecraft that could survive a voyage into the atmosphere of a gas giant. The first to complete their craft would likely be the crew to retrieve the Voyager's multi-spatial probe, which was stuck in the gas giant's extreme atmosphere. (VOY: "Extreme Risk")

Voyager later unwittingly became the catalyst for a space race on Kelemane's planet. (VOY: "Blink of an Eye")

In the Delta Quadrant, the Antarian Trans-stellar Rally was a space race held by the Antarians. In 2377, Tom Paris entered the Delta Flyer into that very event. (VOY: "Drive")

By 2381, Sam Rutherford had forgotten about how he built racing ships for the Devron 500. This was because his memories were repressed and replaced with new ones when he was given a cybernetic implant years earlier. When he was in a coma however, he met a younger version of himself that was a manifestation of his repressed memory in a "dream," he had, and he learned about his early criminal activities. (LD: "Reflections")

The Space Race was a term used to describe the informal competition between the United States and the Soviet Union in the 1950s to be the first to explore outer space with artificial satellites, to send Humans into space, and to land them on the Moon. Sputnik I was a catalyst for this space race. References to this Space Race from Earth's history were cut from TOS: "The Omega Glory".
