La'an and M'Benga in athletic wear

La'an taking the role as M'Benga's sparring partner

A sparring partner was someone who regularly engaged in martial arts with another for the purpose of recreation and sharpening skills. It could also refer to anyone with whom one fought.

In 2152, Trip Tucker informally referred to Zho'Kaan in his chief engineer's log as his sparring partner, as the Arkonian had fired on him earlier. (ENT: "Dawn")

In 2153, Malcolm Reed discouraged J. Hayes from leaving him in Enterprise NX-01's cargo bay, suggesting rather that he could use a sparring partner, if Hayes was up to it. The MACO affirmed he was always ready. (ENT: "Harbinger")

In 2373, Amaro and Stolzoff had been sparring partners. After her death, he recalled, "The first time we faced off, I remember thinking I ought to take it easy on her. She ended up taking me down so hard it knocked the wind out of me. That was the last time I ever pulled a punch with her. She had this one two combination, a feint to the right and a chop to the neck, faked me out every time." (DS9: "Empok Nor")

In 2374, believing Morn to be deceased, Worf recalled the Lurian had been an excellent sparring partner and that he would miss their weekly holosuite fights. (DS9: "Who Mourns for Morn?")
