The Star Trek: Motion Picture Trilogy is a DVD release, containing Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. All three films have been digitally remastered for high definition. Special features are those that were included on the individually remastered releases.
This collection was superseded by the Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection. Nonetheless, this three-disc set did see a 2016 Region 1 reissue in North-America with new box cover art.
Contents[]
Only the newly-produced special features are included on this release, as, ironically, those of the prior respective individual "Special Edition" DVDs were only included on its Blu-ray counterpart, excepting the text commentaries. This was by no means for technical reasons but entirely intentional; the industry favored the then still relatively new Blu-ray home video format over the DVD, giving it preferential treatment where the special features were concerned in order to entice consumers to make the switch from DVD to the new format. This incidentally, was not limited to Star Trek alone, but concerned an industry-wide phenomenon at the time.
