(written from a production point of view)

Star Trek: Section 31 is the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Star Trek: Section 31. [2] In North-America, the release came combined with the Blu-ray Disc, and digital variants of the film. For American customers, the Blu-ray version was only available as part of the 4K UHD set. A "Limited Edition SteelBook®" was concurrently released in North-America.

The North-American two-disc release came in a Viva Elite case (containing the respective 4K UHD and Blu-ray discs), packaged in a cardboard slip-over sleeve. As usual with these releases (geo-restricted to the US and British Canada only, as the – former Blu-ray Region B[1] – European/Australasian releases do not have these) redeemable codes are included for the 4K resolution digital download version of the film.

In the UK, the regular release came as a single-disc edition with only the 4K UHD version included, as a single-disc Blu-ray version was released separately in the UK, Benelux, Germany, Scandinavia, and Spain. The UK regular one-disc release came also packaged in the standard plastic snapcase, stored within the customary cardboard slipcover. Still, the UK and German (where a regular single-disc 4K UHD was not released) "limited" SteelBook editions were the 4K UHD/Blu-ray two-disc combo variants as released in North-America, albeit still without the digital download option.

Special features[]

  • Art Squad – Production Designer Paul Kirby and Set Decorator Summer Gaal present the sets designed for Section 31.
  • Alpha Squad – A breakdown of each of the six members of the Section 31 Squad: Alok Sahar, Quasi, Zeph, Rachel Garrett, Melle, and Fuzz.
  • Stunts Squad – Stunt Coordinator Christopher McGuire and his team take us through the prep and execution of many of the stunts designed for the film.
  • Gear Squad – Prop Master Mario Moreira gives a look inside the prop closet and all the gadgets.
  • Georgiou – Philippa Georgiou is one of the most complex characters in Star Trek history and her further development is discussed by the producers, screenplay writer Craig Sweeny, the team that created her look, and Georgiou performer Michelle Yeoh herself.
  • Gag Reel

The "Art Squad" special feature was lacking on the DVD counterpart release, almost certainly on purpose.

Background information[]

  • While Spain and the Benelux countries had seen their own individual DVD, and Blu-ray counterpart releases, it was apparently decided to forgo on their own 4K UHD release, arguably because of the very bad reception of the film, the fact that the 4K UHD disc format was still very much a film-buff niche market in those territories, or both – partially substantiated by the decision in Germany to only release the 4K UHD variant in the SteelBook combo as a "Limited Edition". For the format fans though, this did not pose much of a problem, as the format was not geo-restricted and any US, UK or German import would do.[1]
  • Similarly, the Scandinavian countries, Italy and again Spain had seen their own individual single-disc Blu-ray release, somewhat ironically in the same limited SteelBook packaging variant, that was otherwise reserved for the 4K UHD/Blu-ray combo release elsewhere. Like in the Benelux, 4K UHD fans in the Nordics, Italy and Spain had to make do with (UK) imports.
  • The same incidentally, applied for customer fans elsewhere in the world as well as no other separate releases were foreseen for territories beyond the five where the film was released on the various home video formats, [3] which again was most likely due to the film's bad reception.

Footnote[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 The Region geo-restricting encoding had, for all intent and purposes, been dispensed with all together by the industry upon the advent of the UHD format, even though that policy change has never been made public officially. This incidentally, had already been applied to the Blu-ray disc format as well, whose region encoding was since late 2009 silently, but gradually, abandoned too, which in Star Trek's case started with the Blu-ray releases of TOS Season 2 and Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection, [1](X) only to pick up speed from the mid-2010s onward.
