(written from a production point of view)

Star Trek: Section 31 is the Blu-ray Disc release of Star Trek: Section 31. [2] As a Blu-ray only single-disc version, the set was only released as such in Europe. In North America, the Blu-ray disc was solely available as part of the 4K UHD/Blu-ray counterpart combo release.

As usual, the European single-disc release came mounted in the regular plastic snapcase, packaged within the customary cardboard slipcover. Exceptions were made however, in Scandinavia, Italy and Spain where it was decided to have a separate "Limited SteelBook® Edition" released alongside the from the UK imported regular edition in the two former cases – Spain too had its own regular release. That single-disc SteelBook packaging variant incidentally, was elsewhere utilized as the double-disc 4K UHD/Blu-ray combo counterpart release, making the Nordics and the two Mediterranean countries the only territories where the Blu-ray only version got the preferential treatment.

As of 2025, Blu-ray discs are no longer marketed anywhere as region-restricted,[1] nor are regions even indicated anymore on the packaging, that of the Italian release excepted – besides the explicit mention of the disc being playable in all Regions A/B/C on the Spanish release packaging – with all releases being in actuality region-free as the region encoding practice had by then become obsolete for the Blu-ray format entirely, explaining the unified contents for all region releases in the process. It also explains why the single-disc version was not slated for a separate release in a wider array of former Region A/B/C territories; Blu-ray only customers in those territories, North-Americans included, were equally well served with European imports.

Footnote[]

  1. The Region geo-restricting encoding had, for all intent and purposes, been dispensed with all together by the industry upon the advent of the 4K Ultra HD format, even though that policy change has never been made public officially. This incidentally, had already been applied to the Blu-ray disc format as well, whose region encoding was since late 2009 silently, but gradually, abandoned too, which in Star Trek's case started with the Blu-ray releases of TOS Season 2 and Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection, [1](X) only to pick up speed from the mid-2010s onward.
