The Season Four packaging with discs and interior art
Releases of Star Trek: The Next Generation on DVD began in 2002. These were the first releases to be made as season boxsets, and to contain significant special features, including documentaries and production design galleries.
Originally, region 1 releases were marketed in hardboard carton packages, whereas the region 2 releases were packaged in hard plastic cases. Japan marketed both versions, The European region 2 hard plastic cases as "Special Premium Boxes", limited to 5,000 copies per season. Noteworthy is that while some of the special features in the region 1 edition were only available through promotional actions (often on a separate disc), all of these were standard included in the region 2 edition.
On 22 May 2006, slimline versions of the season boxsets were released in region 2, at a much lower price point.
On 19 February 2013, newly-redesigned Region 1 packages were announced on StarTrek.com for release starting with the first two seasons on 12 March 2013 as an Amazon.com exclusive with the remaining five seasons being released on 16 April 2013. [1]
