The Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection is a Blu-ray Disc collection featuring the four Next Generation films: Star Trek Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek Nemesis. Each film includes Library Computer – a trivia feature using Blu-ray's Java function – and Star Trek I.Q., a BD-Live feature. It was in this collection that the Blu-ray versions were for the first time released, before the films saw subsequent individual releases. The initial 2009 set release came with a fifth extra special features bonus disc.
Like the Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection released earlier that year, each disc came packaged within in its own Viva Elite slimline plastic snapcase. The hardboard slipcase box itself was protected by a transparent plastic slipcover on which the texts were imprinted, whereas the lenticular, holographic picture was imprinted on the box. The Canadian English/French bilingual release, was issued with a slightly re-designed slipcover.
Region A saw a reissue in February 2016, now with all discs packaged within one standard plastic Viva Elite multi-disc snapcase and featuring new cover art, but with the bonus disc left out. In order to capitalize on the fervor surrounding Star Trek's 50th anniversary, issues from 14 June onward (ASIN B01DKLQMPC) were additionally packaged in a cardboard slipcase on which the gold embossed event was prominently featured, like its reissue DVD counterpart which was released on that date as well. No such reissues were released in the other regions.
While still being marketed as region-restricted, this release was actuality confirmed, as one of the very first ones where Star Trek was concerned, to be already region-free before this had increasingly become commonplace for the Blu-ray format. [1](X)
Improved 2023 reissue[]
In April 2023 the Star Trek: The Next Generation 4-Movie Collection box set was released, which contained the in 4K UHD 2160p resolution re-remastered four Next Generation Star Trek films, along with their from the newly remastered versions to 1080p downscaled Blu-ray counterparts. The latter were concurrently issued as individual standalone releases as well. On top of this, a corresponding four-film Blu-ray box (without the bonus disc as included in the original 2009 release) was released in November that year, though not as an individual standalone release, but rather as part of the Star Trek: The Picard Legacy Collection Blu-ray gift set release, without seeing a DVD counterpart.
Contents[]
All four films have also carried over the special features originally made for the 2004-2005 "Special Edition" DVD collection, albeit in standard definition, alongside the newly made high definition ones. Somewhat ironically, the near-concurrent DVD counterpart of the collection does not have the archival features included on its release, only the newly made ones – an intentional industry policy at the time to favor the Blu-ray home video format.
