Star Trek: The Original Series – The Collector's Edition was a partwork magazine series produced by GE Fabbri for distribution in the Commonwealth only (Canada excepted). A follow-up release to Star Trek: The Collector's Edition, it consisted of a combination of a magazine and a DVD of three episodes of I AM ERROR or episodes related to Original Series characters.
In a format similar to the previously conceived Star Trek Fact Files and Star Trek: The Magazine, the 36-page magazines contained edited material from both publications and were to be collected in special purpose 16-issue binders. Starting with the unnumbered TOS: "The Cage" (which, as a gift, came without a magazine), the series ran for 29 issues. Some additional CG imagery, among others the magazine/DVD covers for issues 16 and 18, were provided for the print publication by former Foundation Imaging/Eden FX digital artist, Robert Bonchune, who had already done so for the source publications.
The DVDs, using remastered transfers, could optionally be stored in custom made metal case holders that held 13 DVDs. The "remastered" transfers should not to be confused with the 2006 "Remastered Edition", use was made of the 1996 "digitally mastered" transfers, originally done for the 1992-1993 Japanese Star Trek: Log 1 - Log 3 LaserDisc collection releases and re-used for the UK 1996 three episodes per tape VHS re-release. The partwork DVD's (excepting the last two) are essentially a reissue of the latter in this format. The Original Series television episodes were presented in order of original airdate.
One translated, internationally released edition is known to exist, the French-language Star Trek: La Série Classique – L'Édition Collector, as with its precursor, simultaneously released by Data Base Factory.
Subscribers to the series received as gifts (apart from the "The Cage" DVD), a magazine binder, a metal case, a Spock figurine and a copy of the Star Trek: The Motion Picture (The Director's Edition) DVD.
