The Star Trektrading card set released by Leaf in 1967 was the first such set released. The set was only released on a limited scale due to the company's small distribution area (Ohio and Illinois), and was quickly recalled as a result of licensing issues. As such, it is extremely rare.
The cards contained black and white images from various episodes, as well as blooper images from filming, coupled with reverse-side text that was largely fabricated, and had little connection to the episode the image originated from.
In the mid-1990s, a dealer claimed to have discovered "a European version" of the same series (not a reprint, but decades old cards which were never released). He sold these cards at a large margin, using a letter from Paramount verifying their origin. A decade or so later, it was revealed to be a hoax. The dealer had received a letter from Paramount saying the cards were fake, and he copied the letterhead and signature to create a false letter of authorization. The cards were in fact, modern (unauthorized) reprints. An unauthorized reprint of the set also took place in 1981, but they at least have the word "reprint" near the copyright.
