Star Trek: Log 1 was the season one LaserDisc box set released only in Japan. It contained 16 discs total, with one episode per side dubbed into Japanese. The original English soundtrack was also available with Japanese subtitles. One side of disc 15 contained the "Next Voyage" episode previews as a stand alone feature. The all color version of the "The Cage" was included on disc 16, along with the documentary The Star Trek Saga: From One Generation To The Next.
This is the only LaserDisc release of "The Menagerie, Parts I & II" featuring the standard disc jacket artwork. The US release of those episodes had been part of another LaserDisc set, the 1984 "Television Classics: Volume 1" collection, and were never re-released. "The Cage" retains the artwork from the standalone US version, but without inclusion of the cut with the black and white footage.
For this release and its two follow-ups, Log 2 and Log 3, use was made of new transfers of the footage. The footage was cleaned up and color corrected, at the time called "digitally mastering", and was picture quality wise the best edition commercially available until the advent of the 2007 remastered DVD version, the earlier DVD versions still making use of the original transfers. These Japanese transfers were used twice more, for the UK 1996-1998 VHS re-release, and the 2007 Star Trek: The Original Series - The Collector's Edition DVD/Magazine combo release. Stills originating from this project were later included as illustrative backdrops in the 2010 reference book, Star Trek: The Original Series 365.
