US release[]
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock was first made available for sale in February 1985. Continuing its efforts to build the retail VHS market for its films, Paramount Home Video priced the release at just $29.95. In addition, alongside the film, Paramount launched its VHS release of Star Trek: The Original Series. [1] By the end of 1985, the VHS had sold 425,000 copies. [2]
In 1986, The Search for Spock was re-released with the first two Star Trek films as part of the "Special Collector's Series", marking Paramount's 75th anniversary with a collection of twenty films at $19.95. (Starlog #113, p.68)
The film was re-released, along with the other films, in 1991 as part of the 25th anniversary; a widescreen edition was made available at the same time.
