The 2001 Star Trek Night was a special evening of programs broadcast by the BBC on BBC2 on 16 September 2001. Presented by well-known Trek fan Jonathan Ross, the night was intended to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the franchise.
A special BBC2 logo was used throughout the night – featuring the "2'" descending onto a 23rd century transporter and dematerializing. This logo was reused on occasion after this, typically before showings of Star Trek episodes or related programs.
Schedule[]
Earlier in the day, the channel showed "The Gamesters of Triskelion" and "A Private Little War" as part of their reairing of Star Trek: The Original Series.
Between features, clip compilations of "Memorable Moments" were shown, and a phone/online vote was organized for fans to choose the episode to air at 21:55 from the "Captain's Picks" – an episode from each series chosen by that series' captain as their favorite: TOS: "The City on the Edge of Forever", TNG: "In Theory", DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars" and VOY: "Counterpoint" (these "Captain's Picks" were later used to form the basis of the Star Trek: Fan Collective - Captain's Log DVD collection).
The night also featured a sneak preview of Star Trek: Enterprise, which was to begin its US airing the following week.
