Starbase 12 was a Federation starbase administered by Starfleet. It was located on a planet in the Gamma 400 system, in Sector 25712, in the Alpha Quadrant. It was located close to the planets Achrady VII, Ceti Alpha V, Gemaris V, Mab-Bu VI, Pollux IV, and Risa. One function of the starbase was as a patrol base for starships patrolling the Romulan Neutral Zone. (TOS: "Space Seed", "Who Mourns for Adonais?"; TNG: "Captain's Holiday", "Power Play", "Aquiel")

Location[]

The coordinates for Starbase 12 were 3300.7000. (SNW: "Under the Cloak of War")

In 2256, the location of this starbase was labeled on the star chart "Alpha/Beta Quadrant Overview" in the ready room aboard the USS Discovery. (DIS: "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad")

In 2258, the starbase's location was labeled on a star chart seen on the main viewscreen of the USS Enterprise. (DIS: "Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2")

In 2259, the location of this starbase was labeled on a stellar cartography chart that was seen on the USS Enterprise's ready room viewscreen. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds", "Spock Amok")

The starbase's location was labeled in a Federation star chart that was in Fleet Admiral Kirsten Clancy's office at Starfleet Headquarters in 2399 and on the bridge of the USS Titan-A in 2401. Starbase 12 was in or near to Federation space. (PIC: "Maps and Legends", "The Next Generation", "Disengage")

In 2401, this starbase's position was labeled on a star chart used by Captain William T. Riker during his attempt at finding the last known location of the SS Eleos XII. (PIC: "The Next Generation")

History[]

22nd century[]

In 2167, Starbase 12 was under the command of Admiral Uttan Narsu, who also commanded all vessels in the sector, including the USS Essex. (TNG: "Power Play")

23rd century[]

Doctor Aspen once served as a counselor on Starbase 12. (SNW: "The Serene Squall")

In 2257, during the first Federation-Klingon War, on or about stardate 4851.5, this starbase, together with Starbase 19 and Starbase 22, was a target of a trio of devastating assaults by the Klingons, which resulted in the destruction of one-third of Starfleet's ships. The base was later occupied by the Klingons. (DIS: "The War Without, The War Within")

The exact plan of attack was not revealed, but it was said to be similar to the plan used at Starbase 22, when a cloaked Klingon raider tailed a Starfleet ship into the starbase spacedock and then ignited its antimatter supply in a suicide mission.

In 2259, the Enterprise was tasked with transporting the Klingon Federation ambassador Dak'Rah to Starbase 12. (SNW: "Under the Cloak of War")

In 2267, James T. Kirk originally set course for Starbase 12 with the SS Botany Bay in tow. On its way, the ship passed near the Ceti Alpha star system. (TOS: "Space Seed")

Later that year, after the USS Enterprise had been stopped by an unknown force, Captain Kirk ordered Lieutenant Nyota Uhura to relay the position and circumstances of the starship to Starbase 12. (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?")

24th century[]

In 2364, the starbase was inexplicably evacuated for two days. Starfleet Command gave no explanation for this action. Captains Walker Keel, Rixx, and Tryla Scott saw this as further evidence of a conspiracy within Starfleet. (TNG: "Conspiracy")

In 2366, the USS Enterprise-D underwent a one-week refit at Starbase 12, following its exhausting mission at Gemaris V. (TNG: "Captain's Holiday")

In 2369, Starbase 12, located in Sector 25712, sent a message on Starfleet Commnet One via an encoded beta channel. This base was named on the chart "Sector Ipai Relay Log – Relay Message Flow 1293" in Relay Station 47 Ops. (TNG: "Aquiel", production art)

Later that year, when Lieutenant Aquiel Uhnari and Klingon Commander Morag were believed to be coalescent organisms, the USS Enterprise-D would have ferried these two to a secure medical facility on Starbase 12. (TNG: "Aquiel" okudagram)

Appendices[]

Background information[]

During the process of filming "Aquiel", the starbase that Uhnari and Morag were to be delivered to was changed from Starbase 212 to Starbase 12. [1]

Apocrypha[]

According to "Who's Who in Star Trek 2", the starbase was established to investigate unexplained phenomena in the Gamma 400 star system. These phenomena were later discovered to have been the work of Apollo.

Starbase 12 was also featured in the video game Star Trek: Bridge Commander and the novel Ship of the Line, in which the USS Bozeman protected Starbase 12, which was the building site of the USS Enterprise-E. The starbase was also mentioned in Star Trek: Elite Force II.

In the video games Star Trek: Armada and Star Trek: Armada II, Starbase 12 was one of the designations in the random name pool for Federation starbases.
