The Steamrunner class was a type of Federation starship in service with Starfleet during late 24th century.

Ships of this class saw action at the Battle of Sector 001 in 2373, where several were lost. Several other Steamrunner class starships were involved in the Dominion War, and participated in Operation Return in 2374 and the second Battle of Chin'toka in 2375. Several ships of the class were stationed near Deep Space 9 during the war.

Background

The Steamrunner class starship was designed by Alex Jaeger at ILM, and was named Streamrunner initially, after a song by the band Fold Zandura. It was rendered as a computer-generated visual effect.

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia, a USS Hiroshima was a Steamrunner-class vessel, but such a ship was never mentioned on screen. Although all ship names referenced in the Encyclopedia are believed to have been derived from canon background graphics or behind-the-scenes sources, it is unclear where this vessel might have been derived from, or if it was simply devised for the reference. The reference to the vessel was deleted from third version of the Encyclopedia.

Apocrypha

The Steamrunner appeared in Activision's "Star Trek Armada" and "Star Trek Armada 2" as a long-range artillery ship.
