The Sutherland class was a type of Federation starship that was in operation with Starfleet in the early 25th century.

History[]

The Sutherland-class is a successor to the older Nebula-class of the early 24th century. Both classes feature the same layout, and design principles.

In 2401, four ships of this class were sent by Starfleet to join an armada opposing an unknown Borg vessel. The Borg liaison sent to the USS Stargazer briefly commandeered this vessel and others, before the crew managed to engage their auto-destruct system. (PIC: "The Star Gazer")

Ships of the Sutherland-class fleet were present for Starfleet's Frontier Day celebration in April of that year, and were hijacked by their younger crews after they came under the direct control of the Borg Collective. (PIC: "Võx", "The Last Generation")

Command and control systems[]

By 2401, the computer systems on board the class had been built to include the Fleet formation mode, also known as Starfleet emergency protocol NX12.11, designed to place all Federation starships within a fleet under the automated control of the Starfleet mainframe. (PIC: "Võx")

Background information[]

While the presence at Frontier Day of at least four Sutherland-class vessels (Almagest, Huygens, Ibn al-Haytham, and Sutherland) as part of the assembled fleet was indicated on the USS Titan-A bridge monitors as seen in the penultimate Star Trek: Picard Season 3 episode "Võx" (reaffirmed by Picard Production Designer Dave Blass on his Twitter account), Picard Research Assistant Jörg Hillebrand has divulged that, even though not part of the "fleet formation mode" demonstration, [1] three of them were indeed visually present at the location. [2] This strongly implied that not all Starfleet vessels assembled at Sol Station took part in the demonstration.

Designed by Thomas Marrone, this ship class was created for Star Trek Online, wherein it was identified as a 25th century variation of the 24th century Nebula-class and named for the Nebula-class USS Sutherland which appeared in TNG: "Redemption II". In a unique collaboration between Cryptic Studios, the game's developer, and the creative minds behind Picard, Marrone himself constructed CGI model of this ship class was brought over to Star Trek canon for onscreen use. This was done as a cost-saving measure, while meeting the demands of different parties to add some much needed variety to the ranks of Starfleet, in the wake of the "copy & paste" fleet debacle in the Picard Season 1 finale "Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2" episode with its single Inquiry-class model. [3] [4]

Though subsequently turned over to the franchise's own visual effects (VFX) department of Picard, where the additional necessary changes were made under the auspices of VFX department heads Jason Zimmerman (Supervisor), Shawn Ewashko (Production Manager), and Brian Tatosky (Associate Supervisor) to make the model ready for its onscreen use, [5] it was decided to keep the in-game livery the model came with as a courtesy to the game developer.
