Sydney was a city in Australia on Earth.
In Brad Boimler's 2381 holonovel Crisis Point II: Paradoxus, the protagonists pursue time traveling Romulans to Sydney on July 1, 1982, whereupon they are immediately accosted by a group of punks. The Romulans were attempting to kill an octopus in a Sydney aquarium, who was an ancestor of 24th century Federation Ambassador Koro. (LD: "Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus")
The Sydney-class Federation starship was named after Sydney. The Sydney-class USS Jenolan was named after the Jenolan Caves, which were visited by Naren Shankar and episode writer Ronald D. Moore following a Sydney convention. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, 2nd ed., p. 220)
