The Takarians were humanoids native to the Takar region on a planet in the Delta Quadrant. They were a pre-industrial civilization with a Bronze Age level of technology. Their currency was called the frang.
Takarian mythology featured a pair of demigods called the Holy Sages, who were prophesied to arrive from the sky and rule over the people as benevolent protectors until they were recalled by the Holy Pilgrim. These events were described in an epic poem, the Song of the Sages.
In 2366, two Ferengi, Arridor and Kol, crashed in Takar after being stranded in the Delta Quadrant by the Barzan wormhole. The circumstances of their arrival and their use of their replicator to perform "miracles" allowed them to masquerade as the Sages and take control of the Takarians.
Arridor and Kol had a profound impact on what had been a flourishing Takarian culture: the Ferengi ruthlessly exploited the Takarians, residing in a lavish temple filled with riches and servants while impoverishing the native populace. They extolled the virtues of greed, preached the Rules of Acquisition, and mandated the wearing of fetishes resembling Ferengi ears.
In 2373, the USS Voyager discovered the Takarians. Captain Kathryn Janeway resolved to remove the Ferengi without unduly disrupting Takarian society, by having Neelix disguise himself as the Holy Pilgrim and fulfilling the end of the Song of the Sages. The Takarians, weary of being exploited and abused, eagerly tried to hasten the departure of the "Sages" by burning them at the stake. (VOY: "False Profits")
