Model ID[]
The same model (ergo ship) was seen in spacedock in ST-III. – The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.12.116.69
- Actually, that was the other Phase II prototype model. For more infomation, see ex astris Ensign Q 14:15, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
Possible Name[]
On the side of one of the nacelle tube, it has the words INTERNATIONAL. Should we use this name vice the B-24-CLN? [1] [2] ‐ Yaroze86 (talk) 18:53, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
- Opposed, if only for the very inconspicuous (single) placement of the "name". If it had been placed on the outside of the nacelles, and/or saucer then we could have had a viable discussion--Sennim (talk) 08:28, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
I feel it was intentional when the model was built and follows Ralph McQuarrie's sketches. [3]. On the other lesser known of the 2 also sorta follows the sketches as you can see the place where the stickers use to be on the aft of the secondary hall [4] [5]. Even the sketches never had a name on the saucer. The second model from ST3 does have a registry as well on the top of the saucer NES-1701 even though the sketches have NCC-1701 and N-1701. I would much rather have it actually named than being only known as the B-24-CLN even if it is an obscure spot. We don't know the reason its there in that spot, but it appears intentional. ‐ Yaroze86 (talk) 18:31, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- "...we don't know..." And herein lies the gist, we don't. Unless some papers turn up from the estates of McQuarrie or model builder Derek Meddings explaining intent (extremely unlikely since both have passed away decades ago) we never will, so it remains speculations galore and speculating and assuming is something MA does not indulge in, for its in-universe articles in particular. Personal preferences do no come into play in this matter; I have several concerning MA in regard to both format and/or some of its contents, but none are heeded because general consensus dictates otherwise. The consensus or generally accepted practice in this particular case is; the saucer top was SEEN in the TNG episode (the inboard side of the starboard nacelle with the "INTERNATIONAL" moniker wasn't btw) and behind-the-scenes images (most notably the one originally published first in The Art of Star Trek) have confirmed the presence of the "B-24-CLN" qualifier (which for all we know is the Starfleet code for a failed experimental prototype: see where I'm going with all this speculating?) as the most prominent one considering its placement on the saucer, so naming the ship thusly is warranted. The same does not apply for the ST3 ship where its entire front, saucer included, was NOT seen, it therefore remaining an "unnamed Federation starship" as per generally accepted practice for in-universe articles--Sennim (talk) 07:44, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
Outside of this discussion, but the B in the registry is not of the same font as the CLN and closer resembles the Memory Beta B i.e. Example (β). Should this be notated as well? ‐ Yaroze86 (talk) 14:38, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
