Namesake[]

I find it a coincidence that a person named Erika Benteen took command of the USS Lakota. After all, there is a Frederick Benteen in history who was with the 7th Cavalry under the command of Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer. Custer and his battalion of men were decimated by Lakota Sioux. – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tarconia (talk • contribs).

Actually, it was most likely not a coincidence -- at least not from a production stand-point. The writers most likely intended that, perhaps as an historical "in-joke". Within the actual Trek universe, however, it would have to be a coincidence (assuming, of course, that the 7th Cavalry were wiped out in that universe... no reference has ever been made to Custer or his men or the battle, at least not that I can find.) Anyways, I think it's safe to add a condensed form of your findings as background information... don't quote me on that, though. :P --From Andoria with Love 18:53, 9 Dec 2005 (UTC)

well, he wasnt wiped out because his battalion was playing rear guard to custer and it wouldnt be the first time. im mean sometime, they name fed ships that fought together after enemies. – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tarconia (talk • contribs).

Another source for the name could be Captain William Benteen, another driven character whose single-minded devotion to an ideal led to his destruction. We met this Benteen in the Twilight Zone episode "On Thursday We Leave for Home.". It appears that Rod Serling, too, was aware of Frederick Benteen. --GNDN 15:34, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

The last name of Captain Erika Benteen of the USS Lakota, whose refusal to destroy the Defiant led to Leyton's surrender, may be a reference to Frederick Benteen, who fought against the Lakota at Little Bighorn as a Captain in the 7th Cavalry, and was criticized for reinforcing another battalion rather than follow orders and lead his men to assist Custer, with some saying that his decision guaranteed Custer's death. 99.225.27.100 01:54, October 24, 2016 (UTC)
