A causality paradox doesn't necessarily result in eliminating a species. By definition, 'cause and effect' initiates a paradox, which could, in a most unfortunate situation cause the elimination of a species, but could also describe altering something completely insignificant. For instance, a person named 'Adam' spelled 'Atom' takes an interest in science and later develops a means of going back in time and influencing a change in how his own name was spelled...

There are definitions on the web which I feel most appropriately describe it as an event that alters the possibility of its own occurrence, or basically, An effect that prevents the cause.
