Theft?[]

I disagree with your position that Adm Janeway's taking the Chrono Deflector was theft. It had been agreed to as payment in return for political favours, therefore not theft. – The preceding unsigned comment was added by 190.208.189.254

I suggest you watch the episode again; Korath reneged on the original deal (Janeway had already done the political favors) and refused to allow her to take it. She returned and feigned agreement to a new proposal by him in order to take it without his permission, the definition of theft. 31dot (talk) 19:25, November 18, 2013 (UTC)
From a transcript of the episode:

KORATH: A Cardassian disruptor. I've modified it to emit a nadion pulse.
JANEWAY: Impressive, but that's not what I've come for.
KORATH: No, you've come for something far more dangerous.
JANEWAY: Where is it?
KORATH: Somewhere safe.
JANEWAY: I went to a great deal of trouble to get you your seat on the High Council. Now give me what you promised.
KORATH: I've scanned your shuttle. It appears that you've made some interesting modifications. Your shields generator is of particular interest.
JANEWAY: It's not for sale.
KORATH: Then what you want isn't available either.
JANEWAY: We had an agreement.
KORATH: Show the Admiral out.

Later:

KLINGON: Maktah hoon Janeway takt.
JANEWAY: I've reconsidered your offer.
KORATH: I thought you might.
JANEWAY: I'll give you the shield emitter but not until I've inspected the device you're offering, to make sure it's genuine.
KORATH: You question my honour?
JANEWAY: If you were honourable, you wouldn't have changed the terms of our agreement. Show it to me, or I'm leaving.
(masking forcefield is lowered) This'll do just fine. (beams away with it)
KORATH: Stop her! 31dot (talk) 19:30, November 18, 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the transcript, however I watched it just prior to attempting my edit, so it is very fresh in my mind.

I can't say that feigning agreement to extortion is the definition of theft, but perhaps a better explanation of the situation is called for in this entry. How would you describe the "transaction"? I should think it would be "appropriation" rather than "theft", don't you think?

I really should get myself a user name after all of these years. 190.208.189.254 01:21, November 19, 2013 (UTC)

The extortion is immaterial; one crime doesn't justify another. Janeway's motives might have been pure (save Voyager, even though breaking the TPD would be illegal), but it's still theft. One can steal for a good reason. I really think it's fine the way it is. 31dot (talk) 09:23, November 19, 2013 (UTC)

Paradoxically, Janeway never stole it because she never had to. Causality loops give me a headache.
