As ships in these units were previously known as cruisers, either Starfleet reclassified them as "destroyers," a possibility, or the term "destroyer" refers to how the ships in the units were to be used and not what type of ships made up the units. It is also possible that most ships in the units were "destroyers" with the cruisers in question acting as command ships, similar to how the WW2 Japanese destroyer flotilla was led by a light cruiser. Based on the frontline appearance of several Excelsior- and Miranda-class starships, it would be reasonable to assume that either one of these classes, as well as the Centaur-type, are classified as "destroyers". It would also be reasonable to assume that destroyer unit is a functional designation, unrelated to ship type, as those classes have previously been referred as "cruisers."
- Actually, no. I think you are talking about the background note regarding Mirandas and Excelsiors, and that note is merely speculation as to them being destroyers. Quite frankly, the whole note should be removed. The ONLY ship that I know of that we can say for a fact was in a "destroyer unit" was the USS Centaur, which we only have that designation (destroyer) for. We don't have any actual evidence for other classes being in those units, as far as I know. I'm removing the entire note, to prevent headache. --OuroborosCobra talk 17:24, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
