I think we should make space whale its' own page, because it seems that a gormagander is simply a type of space whale, rather than an alternate name.
The reason I say this is because in Second Contact Beckett Mariner described the species that sent the Whale Probe to Earth as space whales. I'd say that qualifies it to have its' own page.

The exact quote from Mariner when she was talking about Spock was "He got frickin' Genesis deviced and fought Khan and some space whales!"
Of course they actually didn't even make contact with the whales, just the probe, but she exaturated.

I'm returning to this discussion again because it seems that this has been misunderstood. Someone changed the article to say that Mariner described the humpback whales as space whales. This simply isn't the case. She was referring to the race that built and sent the Whale Probe. (they were the "villains" of the fourth film) Remember, she said that Spock "fought Khan and some space whales!" He didn't fight the humpbacks, they were the good guys, the antagonists were the unseen race that sent the probe.
This is why I've been trying to split the two pages, because a gormagander seems to be a type of space whale, just like the unseen race in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Since it seems clear that there are at least two species of space whales, I think we should have separate pages for them.

Wow. Totally forgot about this discussion. But yeah, I assume they would've realistically. Although since they were never shown in The Voyage Home this is just speculation. I suppose an argument could be made that Mariner was just shooting her mouth and described the species incorrectly. Nevertheless, the term was used. I think that we should have an article called "space whale" on Unnamed non-humanoids (23rd century) that should detail as much of what we know about the ancient unseen race in The Voyage Home. As for the space whale page itself, it should be a separate page altogether, not a redirect page. Horse doesn't redirect to pony, and so space whale shouldn't redirect to Gormagander since "space whale" seems to refer to at least two different species. --- Noah Tall (talk) 08:30, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Sentient?[]
How does the episode portray or describe them as sentient at all? I'm not saying they aren't, but I haven't seen any evidence that they are, and I don't recall any reference to their sentience in the Discovery or elsewhere. --TimPendragon (talk) 00:03, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
