Are we sure his name is Kardashev and Vance is not simply referring to a USS Kardashev (named after the recently deceased Nikolai Kardashev commanded by T'Leis? JagoAndLitefoot (talk) 10:04, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
- Kardashev is the person's name. Fleet Admiral Charles Vance says, "Kardashev?", and the captain responds. That is one indication. Another is that the name is not in italics, like Le Guin.Memphis77 (talk) 10:09, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
He might be using his ship's name as a shorthand. E.g. if he asked "Discovery?" Saru would also respond. As for the italics, I wouldn't trust the close captions entirely, they've been wrong before.
Him being named Kardashev is not impossible, but the actor was credited under another name, and the name is clearly a reference to Nikolai Kardashev, which would make sense as a ship. JagoAndLitefoot (talk) 10:24, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
- Dialog:
- Adm. Vance: "Reilling VII needs additional shields. They're dealing with solar flares. Kardeshev?"
- Capt. (Name in dispute): "We'll bring them some shade, sir.-if they can last a week."
- Adm. Vance: "They can".

I know the dialogue, but him saying "We'll bring them some shade" might very well be a response in the name of the crew of the USS Kardashev here. Saru would respond the same if the admiral said "Discovery?". I'm not saying it can't be his name, but given that the name is different in the credits I would for now not assume it either way. Hopefully it will be cleared up at some point by some production source. JagoAndLitefoot (talk) 10:36, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
