Since Rosenthal and Konner co-wrote the story and Nicholas Meyer and Denny Martin Flinn co-wrote the screenplay, I would say that this fact was known before Nimoy pointed it out. Those credits with the story are those who wrote the outline for the film's plot; those credits with the screenplay actually wrote the script based on that outline.
