Needed?[]
Are these philosophy pages need? It seems everything in them is found in the species articles, or should be, as a species philosophy is going to be the basis of everything else about them. Tyrant 14:51, 22 Jan 2005 (CET)Tyrant
- I agree, how many of these are really necessary? --Gvsualan 19:28, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Society and Culture Portal[]
The Philosophy subject should be in it; while some are indeed not needed, as there's not a huge amount of subject readily available on them, others, such as, say, the Humans and Vulcans, Klingons, or Dominion and Borg, have an enormous amount, enough so that some fans have patterned themselves off of them (especially the Klingons). If that's not Socially and Culturally oriented, the subject doesn't exist. --ChrisK 16:25, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
Definition of philosophy[]
There are two usages of philosophy, both used in this article. One is as an academic subject, and involves the study of metaphysics, ethics, logic etc. That is the philosophy that Picard refers to in the opening quote, and what would usually be given as a definition of philosophy. It is quite different from a set of beliefs, which is how the article defines it. Moreover, academic philosophy, if done properly, should be universal to all species. I'm not totally sure how to resolve this issue. I think that the 'set of beliefs' definition should be removed altogether as it is such a vague concept that I cannot see what it adds to the wiki. I can write a short article on academic philosophy and where it is referenced in Star Trek. However, there is an issue of links, for instance 'Vulcan philosophy', in which 'philosophy' links to this page and is used in the 'set of beliefs' sense. These links would therefore have to be removed. 'Vulcan philosophy' would more appropriately link here anyways. (Incidentally I have not looked but I suspect that the 'Logic' page suffers from a similar problem). – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Quarkladiesman (talk • contribs).
