Footwear: Split[]

Can't we split this into boot and shoe now, leaving this page mostly as a list? --LauraCC (talk) 18:49, August 15, 2017 (UTC)

As noted in the discussion above this was created this way in an era of self-limitation. The same could apply to headgear too. --Alan del Beccio (talk) 17:32, August 17, 2017 (UTC)

These all fall under "clothing accessories". Maybe a list sorting accessories by type, with the list headings "footwear", "headgear" etc, and split all the individual named items to their own pages. --LauraCC (talk) 17:37, August 17, 2017 (UTC) Or we could possibly have categories to sort headgear and footwear into. --LauraCC (talk) 18:39, September 5, 2017 (UTC)

Oppose: given the previous discussion on the subject. --| TrekFan Open a channel 02:04, February 3, 2018 (UTC)
Precedence from 12 years ago shouldn't apply in this case. We have better access to and reached a certain threshold in our expansion of the project where things can be better individualized. Has the actual term "footwear" ever been identified? Because otherwise, we are basically splitting shoes and boots (the primary redirectors here) and creating a list of similar articles that fit into the footwear category, which can also be accomplished with a template or category, if there is no need for a central article. --Alan (talk) 14:16, October 3, 2018 (UTC)

Once, in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, referring to the Gravity boots. Spock calls the boots the killers of Gorkon wore "incriminating footwear". --LauraCC (talk) 14:39, October 3, 2018 (UTC)

The two biggest conflicts I see between splitting shoes and boots is:
  • "Also that year, Leonard McCoy complained about sand in his shoes while traversing the deserts of Lactra VII. (TAS: "The Eye of the Beholder")"
  • "While trapped on Galorndon Core, Geordi La Forge stated to Centurion Bochra that "I never lie when I've got sand in my shoes." (TNG: "The Enemy")"
Which both cases boots are referred to as shoes. --Alan (talk) 14:49, October 3, 2018 (UTC)

Wouldn't what he was actually wearing take precedence? Add a note, perhaps: "Sometimes boots were referred to as shoes." --LauraCC (talk) 14:51, October 3, 2018 (UTC)

According to one site, boots are "Any shoe that comes above the ankle." [1] --Memphis77 (talk) 15:03, October 3, 2018 (UTC)

So it's a type of shoe, just as a slipper or sandal might be. --LauraCC (talk) 15:04, October 3, 2018 (UTC)

Yep.--Memphis77 (talk) 15:11, October 3, 2018 (UTC)
