Series abbreviation[]
Memory Alpha seems to have chosen "SA" as the abbreviation for the Starfleet Academy series. Am I the only one who thinks that two-letter series abbreviations are very ambiguous and unclear?
"ST" you'd usually think Star Trek, not Short Treks; and "SA" could suggest anything from South Africa to Saudi Arabia or South Australia. "LD" doesn't feel like anything, let alone Trek.
Proposing a vote for changing to "SHO" for Short Treks, "LOW" for Lower Decks, and a to-be-decided three-letter abbreviation for Starfleet Academy, maybe "SFA" for Starfleet Academy? NickM98 (talk) 09:01, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- I wasn't aware that they were making a series Star Trek: South Africa... Is Trevor Noah going to be the captain and Charlize Theron his first officer? If that is the case, then we certainly have a conflict to resolve... Just like we would if they created series called Star Trek: Lucid Dreams and Star Trek: Star Trek, but until those hypothetical series are OK'd – and if you can't even follow your own suggested logic for two word series abbreviations, when we already have – why make things more convoluted than our already practical system fulfills... --Gvsualan (talk)
- God, no. Let's be clear, MA's goals are to be as simple, concise, and, quite frankly, as straight forward as possible. From day one, it has followed and will continue to follow two simple rules:
- 1) multi-word series titles are shortened to the abbreviations of each individual letter of the series: TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, ST, LD, SA.
- 2) single-word series titles are shortened to the first three letters of the series name: VOY, ENT, DIS, PRO.
- In the end, what we have is a consistent and simple way to refer to each series that takes out all the guesswork for what the formula a particular series' abbreviation might be. This means we really need to not have this discussion every time a new series is announced... --Gvsualan (talk) 01:32, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
