Re: Background info - Would Data's Day not be considered a feature of O'Brien prominently in the story of an episode?
- Hard to say. "Data's Day" certainly features a B-plot that somewhat revolves around O'Brien (his wedding). In the episode, O'Brien has 16 lines across 4 scenes (one of which is voice-over communications). The episode is clearly centred on Data and his actions and "feelings" of dealing with daily life including the wedding. We see O'Brien, but only in the sense of how Data deals with O'Brien.
- Comparatively, in "The Wounded", we literally have a scene in the opening teaser that is just O'Brien and Keiko having dinner. The episode clearly centers on O'Brien and his emotions and actions and grappling with helping the Cardassians go after his old Captain. He has more than 50 lines across something like 8 or 9 scenes including some where he is the only main cast/regular in the scene.
- "The Wounded" is clearly an O'Brien-focused episode (not that it doesn't have some Picard focus as well). To that end, it's clearly above and beyond his involvement in "Data's Day"; whether or not the phrasing "this is the first one in quite O'Brien is 'featured prominently'" is more of a subjective argument with no true definition or "correct answer". O'Brien's part poorly written
I've always liked the plot and theme of this episode, but I've always hated the crappy, inconsistent writing handed to Colm Meaney. The scene at the bar in 10 Forward is supposed to explain why he feels as he does, but I'm sorry, he just comes across as having a split personality. It probably would work if it wasn't for the scene with his wife over the potato casserole when he acts completely puzzled as to why anyone would continue to harbor any antipathy for the Cardassians. I mean, it completely contradicts the rest of what he is saying. Is he lying to his wife? It's either piss-poor writing or mindless editing. - You also seemed to have missed the point of the episode. That O'Brien acts with what looks like a "split personality" is intentional, it is as much about his own dealing with his internal demons about how he feels about the war and the Cardassians as it is about chasing the Phoenix. Who played the voice of the comm officer of the U.S.S. Phoenix?
Musical cue possibly referenced and adapted into DS9 theme?
I have no citation for this point, but I feel it's interesting enough to note here in the talk page that maybe one day someone will be able to investigate and confirm or deny: The closing music cue for this episode as Picard turns his back to Macet is strongly reminiscent to me of the DS9 theme (this episode introduces the Cardassian conflict that become the main focus for DS9). Both composed by Dennis McCarthy. Seems to fortuitous to be a coincidence, but again, I have no source to confirm a connection. TheHYPO (talk) 15:07, July 17, 2018 (UTC)
