An inside joke among Star Trek writers is that the reason why Spock looked so surprised when he first saw the Romulan commander on the viewscreen during "Balance of Terror" was because "his father is commanding the Romulan ship!"
Lenard's performance as the Romulan commander impressed the producers, and he was therefore added to a short-list of possible replacements for Leonard Nimoy to play Spock. The popularity of the Romulan commander also led to Lenard being recast later in the series, as Spock's father, Sarek. A running joke among the Star Trek production staff was that the main reason why Spock looked so surprised, when first seeing the Romulan Commander in "Balance of Terror", was because Spock's father was commanding the Romulan ship. {{incite|all three sentences need to be cited}}

This character is often credited with being the first Romulan seen on Star Trek, even though technically Decius was seen first, albeit with a helmet covering up his ears. Lenard's character was the first Romulan fully seen with Vulcan-type ears.
The first because it is uncited, and was previously removed. The second because it probably falls into MA:NIT or MA:NOT. --Alan (talk) 13:46, April 30, 2018 (UTC)
Bob Ott?[]
According to a Profiles in History auction[1], a Romulan tunic from either BoT or TEI, had a costumer's tag in it that read "Bob Ott" and "MPCC". Not sure who "Bob Ott" is, but there is nothing distinguishing about the shirt, so it's not clear who or when this was used; just another tidbit of something or nothing that's floating now about in the inter-space. –Gvsualan (talk) 15:58, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
