Targalus IX was the inhabited ninth planet in its star system, and the homeworld of the Targalan civilization. Other lifeforms native to the planet included the tie-dyed coma beetle and a small lizard-like animal.
In 2382, Targalus IX transitioned from a capitalist economy to a post-scarcity society with the development of replicator technology. A planet-wide celebration was held, while all financial structures were to be converted into museums and meditation gardens. Although most Targalans embraced the new status quo, some of the former rich elite formed terrorist cells across the continent in a futile attempt to regain their lost power.
Alongside their economic transition, Targalus IX also joined the United Federation of Planets. The USS Cerritos was assigned to assist the Targalans in disposing of their obsolescent wealth. Captain Carol Freeman eventually entered into an agreement, brokered by D'Vana Tendi, for House Tendi of the Orion Syndicate to take over the disposal process. (LD: "Shades of Green")
