A tent was a type of portable and temporary shelter made of fabric, often used while camping or in situations where permanent shelter may not be available.

In 2369, when Odo was in Quark's during a quiet period, Quark attempted to get Odo "into the tent" by offering him a holosuite program. (DS9: "If Wishes Were Horses")

The pre-warp species of the Boraalan used tents for camping when traveling. They did not believe these were sufficient shelter for great storms. (TNG: "Homeward")

The Capellans used tents on Capella IV. In 2267 during a power struggle over mining rights, Captain Kirk, Spock, and Doctor McCoy had their gear stored in a Capellan tent after surrendering weapons and instruments as a sign of good faith. (TOS: "Friday's Child")

A holographic reenactment of Henry V featured a large medieval tent. (TNG: "The Defector")

Necessity[]

In the 20th and 21st centuries on Earth, poverty and homelessness often resulted in individuals living in tents or makeshift shelters. In 2024, many people that were put into the Sanctuary Districts lived in tents as the districts didn't have enough housing. (DS9: "Past Tense, Part I", "Past Tense, Part II")

In the years following World War III, with major cities destroyed and few governments left, some inhabitants of Bozeman, Montana lived in tents. (Star Trek: First Contact)

Mission specific[]

In the 2150s, Enterprise NX-01 carried tents for missions that may result in staying on a planet overnight. In 2151, Commander Tucker and Ensign Mayweather shared a tent while camping on the surface of Archer IV. (ENT: "Strange New World") Later that year, the away team would bring tents to stay overnight on the rogue planet. (ENT: "Rogue Planet")

Early settlers of the fledgling Melona colony stayed in tents until residential pods could be built. Carmen Davila invited Commander William Riker to join her in her tent for a meal of rations in 2368. (TNG: "Silicon Avatar")

Historic Earth militaries often housed soldiers in tents. The musketz-wielding aliens created by Q for his 18th century French military scenario in 2364 placed their tents around a campfire. Q himself had a marshal's tent. (TNG: "Hide And Q")

Q later attempted to represent the Q Civil War to the crew of USS Voyager as the American Civil War, complete with recreations of encampments of tents. (VOY: "The Q and the Grey")
