The Barrens is an area surrounded by a subspace "bubble" in the Alpha Quadrant where no stars exist.
In 2154, Emory Erickson, inventor of transporter on Earth, travelled aboard the Enterprise NX through the Barrens in an effort to return his son, Quinn, to normal space after his transporter signal had been trapped in the subspace bubble nearly 15 years before. (ENT: "Daedalus")
