The Best of Trek is a series of eighteen books, published by Signet and Roc Books from 1978 to 1996, collecting the best articles from Trek, a Star Trek fanzine. Four omnibus "The Best of the Best of Trek" were also published from 1990 to 1997.
The Best of Trek #14, ISBN 0451166469 offers a conjectural history of the mirror universe, suggesting that Surak died as an infant before he could lead Vulcan into the ways of logic and peace, and that Khan Noonien Singh won the Eugenics Wars. Like The Mirror Universe Saga, it portrays the mirror version of David Marcus as a rebel seeking to overthrow the Terran Empire.
The Best of Trek #6, ISBN 0451124936, meanwhile, includes a conjectural timeline of the Star Trek universe, postulating that the events of The Original Series and Animated Series take place in the first decade of the 23rd Century. It also includes capsule biographies of key TOS characters, giving Nyota Uhura the first name "Penda" (Nyota having not yet been confirmed in canon as of the book's 1983 publication); its profile of Hikaru Sulu, however, uses the first name that was later confirmed on screen.
