"The Burn was the day the galaxy took a hard left."
– Cleveland Booker, 3188 ("That Hope Is You, Part 1")
The Burn was an event that occurred sometime between the 3060s and the 3080s during which most of the galaxy's dilithium mysteriously exploded, causing widespread death and destruction. The United Federation of Planets was unable to determine what caused the disaster, not could it prove the event would not recur. By 3188 the Federation had largely collapsed as a galactic power.
