Background information[]
- This is the first Star Trek novel to take place after Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The Pocket Books series would continue to move back and forth between the TOS and post-TMP eras throughout its run.
- The Science Fiction Book Club released a special edition of the novel in hardback in July 1982.
- The book features an introduction by David Gerrold.
- Guest character Kailyn is diagnosed with choriocytosis, the same disease which nearly killed Spock. (TAS: "The Pirates of Orion") Both instances of the diseases were written by author Howard Weinstein.
- The flashback sequence establishes that James T. Kirk served aboard the USS Normandy as a lieutenant commander. This would place the flashback after his time on the USS Farragut and his run in with the dikironium cloud creature, where he was only a lieutenant. (TOS: "Obsession")
