The Good of Many title

Ensign Rutherford reads the scenario's title.

The Good of the Many, also titled The Good of Many, was one of the holopod simulations presented by Shari yn Yem during the drills she conducted aboard the USS Cerritos in 2381. According to Yem, the simulation was based on the experiences of various other Starfleet crews.

The program's object was: "Chief Engineer, enter the chamber and fix the warp core breach to save the ship."

The Good of the Many program

Rutherford begins the program

This simulation was set in the main engineering aboard a simulated Constitution II-class starship. It was based on the experiences aboard the USS Enterprise at the conclusion of the Battle of the Mutara Nebula in 2285, and required the chief engineer to sacrifice themself to repair the warp core and prevent a breach.

The simulation was attempted by Ensign Sam Rutherford. He attempted to open the door to the reactor but, lacking gloves, kept burning his hands. Removing his boots and placing them over his hands, Rutherford was able to open the door, but the warp core breached before he could repair it. The ship was destroyed, and Rutherford failed the simulation with a score of 24%.

Unknown to the crew, Yem had tampered with the holoprogram so that the entire crew would fail. (LD: "I, Excretus")
