- The book was originally conceived by John Van Citters and Ben Grossblatt of becker&mayer!, who developed the ten precepts the book is structured around, before bringing author DeCandido in to "flesh it out into a whole book." [3]
- In addition to canon sources, DeCandido drew inspiration from the novels The Final Reflection and Kahless. [4]
