A Klingon boy on his first targ hunt learns a valuable lesson about honesty, honor, and boasting when his grandfather tells him "The Legend of Gorath."

Summary[]

Many years ago on Qo'NoS, a young Klingon boy's grandfather is teaching him to hunt a targ. The boy lunges at the targ and throws a spear at it, but misses. The boy and his grandfather run after the targ, chasing it into a cave. The boy is scared to enter the cave, but his grandfather pushes him to do so. They corner the targ and the boy kills it. Afterwards, the boy exaggerates and gloats about his kill, even comparing himself to Kahless. His grandfather tells him to never exaggerate his glory, and tells him the story of Gorath.

Gorath was a Klingon not much older than the boy. He had never been in battle, but called himself a warrior. He was traveling to his uncle's house in Qalmutlh, but two bandits, Krek and Grack, ambushed him. Gorath scared them off with a bat'leth. When he arrived at his uncle's house, he bragged about his run-in, exaggerating the number of bandits, and claimed he attacked and defeated them. However, an eavesdropper for the House of Bronal reported Gorath's story to Bronal. Bronal, fearful of Gorath's power, ordered his assassins to kill him. The assassins killed Gorath and his family.

The grandfather explained that a warrior must always tell the truth about their exploits. The boy understood and the grandfather told the boy he was proud of him.
